What We Do

Thaba’nchu Cart Horse
Outreach Program

Over the years we have provided primary healthcare to the cart horses in Thaba’nchu, as well as providing them with feed when we can.

We currently have over 140 horse owners on our database in the area, each owning between 6-20 horses!

We currently hold 5 outreaches in Thaba’nchu each month. All horses are checked, treated for internal and external parasites, all minor injuries and wounds are cleaned and treated.

Owners are also given advice and support regarding humane horse care and general health.

We are also busy replacing the old Ill fitting harnesses which contribute to most of the injuries we see.

This program has been generously sponsored by Animal Aid Abroad in Australia since 2023.

Our Sanctuary Horses and
Donkeys

We currently have 13 horses and 25 donkeys living at our sanctuary.

These include our blind girl Blush, Shine a retired cart horse, Vuma a rescued bush racer and more recently at the end of March 2024 we welcomed another 100% blind horse into our home.

Gracie, a 3 yr old racehorse how tragically banged her head and lost her sight overnight due to severe trauma of the optic nerve. We now have 2 fully blind horses and 2 partially sighted horses. We aim to raise public awareness about the plight of blind horses and the fact they can in fact lead normal lives.

Our donkey herd is now at 25. These include the first 7 we rescued in early 2022 and then another 12 from the nearby animal pound. They would have ended up at the slaughter or even worse the illegal donkey skin trade had we not intervened. 5 of the Jennies were pregnant at the time.

We are also bottle feeding a 3 month old orphan donkey little Stephan.

Herd by a horse
Program

Our Herd by a Horse program took an exciting turn in early 2024 when we were approached by Liesl van Zyl from Mearas Whisper-Souls Journey with Horses. Liesl is a qualified Equine Wellness Practitioner with over 20 years of experience, and is passionate about facilitating hands on healing, counselling and therapy with the help of horses.

Each month she holds a healing guided meditation session with our horse or donkey herd.

We aim to provide primary healthcare to the donkeys, replace old ill fitting harnesses and feed when we can.

We hold one outreach each month and all donkeys that attend are checked, treated for internal and external parasites, all minor injuries and wounds are cleaned and treated.

Owners are given advice and support regarding  humane care of their donkeys and general health.
